This design was introduced in the early 1960’s, and first appeared in the electric multiple unit trains which were being introduced in large numbers as part of British Railways 1955 Modernisation Plan.
Subsequently it was applied to many locomotive-hauled coaches during overhauls. With a different background colour, this design was also used in Non-Smoking compartments (see Green Candy Stripe).
