More informationBackground:
In the 1970’s British Rail initiated a move away from traditional upholstery methods (fabric permanently fastened to the chair frame) and materials (moquette) in favour of detachable covers, made of repp-type fabrics, with the intention of cleaning the surface of the seats more frequently.
The hoped-for advantages of this system did not fully materialise, and the onset of Sectorisation saw the new sectors gradually returning to traditional ways. “Dogger Red” was introduced in 1984 by the Inter City sector, and was widely used, both in High Speed trains (Inter City 125) and in the Gatwick Express shuttle services.
